The Preacher’s Daughter opened up new opportunities after her impressive win over Irene Aldana at UFC Fight Island 4.
Holly Holm traveled to Fight Island with a 3-5 record in her last eight bouts. She was set to face the up-and-coming Irene Aldana who was a Top 5 fighter. Although the top betting sites like Parhaat Casino Kamanjakoodi had her as the betting favorite, it wasn’t by much. But Holm showed the heart of a champion and walked away with a dominant decision win over the Brazilian fighter. Now the question for Holm is, what next?
Going Out On Top
Although retirement is far from her mind, the 39-year-old Holm said before the fight that she wants to go out on top, and that is to retire with the title. Heading to the Aldana fight, Holm’s coach said that she was one fight away from another title shot. Mike Winklejohn could be correct.
If you look at the current women’s bantamweight rankings, Holm is now up at no. 2 with only Germaine de Randamie on top of her. De Randamie also won her bout at UFC Fight Island 4 but one fight before that, she lost in her title challenge against Amanda Nunes. Holm, meanwhile, has won back-to-back fights against the 4th and 5th ranked female bantamweights. The weight of those two victories could have more merit when it comes to title contention.
Going For Revenge
During the UFC Fight Island 4 post-fight press conference, Holm also talked about the prospect of fighting DeRandamie. Given their history, it was but expected that the Preacher’s Daughter call out the Iron Lady. It can be recalled that Holm and De Randamie fought for the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight title in 2017. De Randamie beat Holm by decision but not without controversy.
De Randamie landed two illegal blows at the end of rounds two and three. De Randamie wasn’t penalized, and Holm was rattled by both shots, giving the Iron Lady an unfair advantage. Holm asked for a rematch but the two have gone separate ways, well perhaps until now.
Last Run At Glory?
Holm’s win over Aldana couldn’t have come at a better time. The Preacher’s Daughter is now 39 years old and even if she won’t admit it, she is in the homestretch of her MMA career. With that victory, she has set herself up for a possible title shot against Amanda Nunes. If not, a number one contender bout against the top ranked Germaine De Randamie could be in the works.
Regardless of which fight is next, this current streak could very well be Holly Holm’s last run at glory. Expect the Preacher’s Daughter to go out with guns blazing.
