For the millions of people out there who are embarking on their MMA journeys through an intense
training program or the occasional light session, MMA video games understandably appeal.
However, not every martial arts-themed gaming release has necessarily hit the spot with MMA
communities, especially in the modern environment. On the whole, though, we’ve seen some great
games in this somewhat niche category of gaming.
Be it on mobile or console, there’s nothing quite like a battle on the mats. Gamers can execute
various disciplines in a virtual scenario, while also learning a thing or two about martial arts as they
progress through the ranks. Sure, other gaming products like craps online and Fortnite also appeal
to MMA fanatics, but games depicting this beloved combat sport are also hard to ignore. Luckily,
there have been some exceptional options over the years, many of which are still accessible in the
modern environment.
So, while many MMA fans are currently playing options like EA Sports UFC 5, below we briefly
highlight some of the finest titles that came before it. After all, without them, titles like UFC 5 simply
wouldn’t be as popular as they are today.
Pride FC: Fighting Championships
Based on the Pride Fighting Championships, Pride FC: Fighting Championships was an
exceptional game at the time of its release. While it might appear to be a tad outdated in the
modern world, this 2003 product was adored when it first hit the shelves. A wonderful advert for the
Japanese promotion, almost everything was nailed in this top-notch product, including the
promotion’s unrivalled atmosphere and the variety of moves gamers could pull off after hours
perfecting their strategies. A great game worth tracking down, Pride FC: Fighting Championships is
a definite classic.
Def Jam: Fight for NY
While MMA purists might not necessarily warm to Def Jam: Fight for NY, this classic inclusion
deserves a mention. For hip hop fans, in particular, the game managed to shine a light on martial
arts as they took part in epic battles with their favorite lyricists. A cult classic with a massive
following behind it, this MMA game with a twist wasn’t the most authentic MMA-themed title we’ve
ever seen, but it certainly delivered plenty of fun and entertainment.
EA Sports MMA
Released on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 in 2010, EA Sports MMA is another unforgettable game
from this relatively niche gaming category. In the game, players could tuck into a highly realistic
package where timing is everything, blocking is essential, and practice bouts are a must if you’re to
stand a chance of progressing through the ranks. A game worth hunting down in 2026, EA Sports
MMA definitely delivered.
Tekken 8
First and foremost, much like the aforementioned Def Jam: Fight for NY, Tekken 8 isn’t strictly an
MMA game. However, it does contain a number of martial arts elements, especially when focusing
on some of the game’s most recognizable fighters. From Eddy using his capoeira moves, to Jin
Kazama showcasing his karate skills, Tekken 8 contains some seriously impressive martial artists.
For gamers and MMA enthusiasts alike, it’s highly pleasurable pulling off some familiar moves with
these formidable fighters.
UFC Undisputed 3
Ending with a clear masterpiece, UFC Undisputed 3 is arguably the very best game we’ve seen
before. Not only was the game’s career mode faultless, but it featured the most famous names
from the UFC, the title’s deep gameplay was absolutely spot on, and it was the perfect multiplayer
game to play with a friend or a loved one while going to war against each other in the Octagon.
